The powerplay in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is often seen as the ideal phase for batters to dominate, take advantage of field restrictions, and set the tone for the innings. However, there have been rare occasions when things have gone drastically wrong, leading to shockingly low scores in the first six overs. These moments usually come as a result of exceptional bowling spells, early wickets, and relentless pressure that leaves batting line-ups struggling to recover.

Teams like the Delhi Capitals (DC) have also found themselves on this unwanted list, highlighting how even strong sides can falter under pressure. These low powerplay totals not only shift momentum instantly but also expose vulnerabilities in batting units, making them some of the most talked-about phases in IPL history.

Top 5 lowest powerplays in IPL history

5. 16/1 - CSK vs DD, Raipur, 2015

The five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), scored the fifth-lowest total in the power play against Delhi Daredevils (DD) in the IPL 2015. Even then, they ended up scoring 119 runs in the first innings. DD's bowlers Zaheer Khan and Albie Morkel claimed two wickets each and dismantled the CSK's batting line-up. DC's Shreyas Iyer and Yuvraj Singh chased down the target in 16 overs. Iyer slammed an unbeaten 70 off 49 deliveries, including ten boundaries and one six.

4. 15/2 - CSK vs KKR, Kolkata, 2011

The MS Dhoni-led team have also scored the fourth lowest total in the powerplays against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2011. They scored 15-2 in the first six overs as the top order batters failed to perform. They scored just 112 runs in the rain-affected match. KKR won the game by ten wickets as they had to chase just 61 runs because of the DLS method. CSK lost only four wickets in the match but they still couldn't get to a good total and lost the match. However, they won their second trophy in the tournament in this season.

3. 14/3 - SRH vs RR, Pune, 2022

The third-lowest powerplay score came in 2022 by the Sunrisers Hyderabad against the Rajasthan Royals in Pune. It wasn't a great match for SRH as they scored just 14 runs in the first six overs. They also lost three wickets in the process. They were chasing 211 runs and lost the game by 61 runs. Yuzvendra Chahal, Prasidh Krishna, and Trent Boult's terrific bowling put pressure on the SRH batters and they kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

2. 14/2 - RR vs RCB, Cape Town, 2009

Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL 2009 were chasing 134 runs against RCB when they scored just 14 runs in the power play. This score is the second-lowest total in the tournament's history. They lost the match by 75 runs. Anul Kumble claimed a fifer for RCB in the match. Praveen Kumar and Jessy Ryder also picked up two wickets in the match. But, Rahul Dravid received the Player of the Match award for an incredible 66 off 48 balls, including eight boundaries and one six.

1. 13/6 - DC vs RCB, Delhi, 2026

The Delhi Capitals (DC) had a tough time at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2026. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the star of the night as he picked up three wickets at the start of the game, putting pressure on the home team. His inswinging yorker to Sahil Parakh was definitely the ball of the match.

In fact, Josh Hazlewood also bowled a memorable spell as he claimed four wickets in three overs and conceded just 12 runs. DC scored the lowest total in the power play, in their own home ground. In the first six overs, they only scored 13 runs. However, they went on to hit 75 runs in the first innings.
