Who is Subhadeep Ghosh? Former Assam player set to replace T Dilip as India's fielding coach

The former Assam cricketer, Subhadeep Ghosh, has become the frontrunner to replace T Dilip as the new fielding coach of the Indian cricket team after the latter's contract has come to an end. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has relieved them of their duties, as reports have claimed.

The BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, has confirmed that two or three names are under consideration, as the report suggests that former India women’s and India A support staff member, Ghosh is the frontrunner for the role.

Ghosh, from Assam, is the front-runner for the role and has been part of the BCCI setup for the last six to seven years, dating back to Rahul Dravid’s tenure at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

Hailing from Digboi in Assam, Subhadeep made his first-class and List A debut for the state in the 1994-195 season, and his last appearance was in the 2004-05 season.

He has smashed 316 runs in 25 innings of first-class cricket at an average of 12.64 with two fifties, along with 307 runs in 17 List A games at an average of 20.46 with two half-centuries.

Ghosh, who represented Assam and Railways, brings extensive playing and coaching experience to the national setup as he has transitioned from the field to coaching. Over the years, he has held the key support roles across several Indian national teams.

Appointed in 2020, he helped India women’s side for the key overseas tours, besides working with the India U19 team during the World Cup campaign. He also served as their fielding coach during the 2023 Asian Games gold medal in Hangzhou.

Ghosh will take over the reins from T Dilip, who has been a vital part of the Indian coaching staff since 2021. He had previously earned a contract extension ahead of last year’s Test series against England, as his tenure officially ended following their recent white-ball tour of the United Kingdom.

Dilip, who had been associated with the role across the three formats of the game, was successful in his tenure. During his time with the team, the blue brigade made it to the final of the ODI World Cup 2023, where they finished as the runners-up of the event.

That was followed by them winning the Champions Trophy 2025 in the United Arab Emirates and the two T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026.
