Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill’s twin centuries during the opening ODI of the three-match series against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram gave them a 1-0 lead in the series as the focus shifted to the second game at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, where the blue brigade aimed to seal the series.   

The home captain won the toss and decided to bowl first on a surface which looked good for batting. But the dew was anticipated to play a strong role in the evening. They handed a debut cap to Auqib Nabi while the visitors made four changes in their line-up.

The West Indies made a rollicking start to the first innings of the encounter. On the very first delivery of the fifth over, Keacy Carty flicked Prasidh Krishna through the mid-wicket region for a strong boundary before being dismissed on nine runs off 10 balls on the final delivery of the same over.

It was a good-length delivery from the lanky pacer. But it came slow off the surface as the right-handed batter went through with the drive early and got it off the outer part of the bat as the ball was dying in front of the fielder at cover point.

Naman Dhir, at extra cover, moved to his left and came forward at a full stretch to get both hands underneath the ball and completed the catch. The umpires checked many times if the fielder had his fingers underneath the ball. But they were satisfied with the angles as the batter was dismissed for nine runs off 10 balls.

West Indies make a dominant start to the innings with Campbell’s century

Despite the loss of his partner, John Campbell continued his aggressive batting and celebrated his half-century off just 29 balls, which was the fastest 50 for a WI batter against India in the ODIs. He converted it to a 65-ball century, which also became the fastest ODI 100 by a WI batter against India in terms of balls being bowled.

It was overall the fifth fastest century by a WI batter in the 50-over format, with Brian Lara’s 45-ball century against Bangladesh in 1999 holding the top place. He was finally dismissed on 101 with five sixes and nine boundaries.

The visiting captain, Shai Hope, also recorded his run-a-ball fifty as they found themselves in a strong position at the halfway mark of the innings.
