India's T20I record in England โ€” Why they've won just 6 of their last 14 matches

India have overall played 14 T20I clashes in England and earned six victories, with a no-result and a win-loss ratio of 0.857. This includes the bilateral series and multi-national tournaments, including the T20 World Cup 2009 and a few bilateral series. However, the overall performance hasn’t been good.

In terms of the number of series being played between the two sides, the blue brigade faced England in two three-match T20I series, where the visitors came out on the winning side on both occasions with a margin of 2-1 in 2018 and 2022. Meanwhile, the home side won both the series in 2011 and 2014, where only one T20I was played in each series.

Beating England in a T20I series in their conditions hasn’t been an easy job for many opponents. Since the beginning of 2020, the home side have lost just two T20I series, which came against India and South Africa in 2022. They blew away Australia and Pakistan in 2020 and 2021, respectively, besides drawing four series.

In the shortest format, they have massive experience on the side. In the past, their ODI World Cup-winning captain, Eoin Morgan, brought the change in approach and conception which helped them do well. Jos Buttler, who won the T20 World Cup 2022 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), has remained a massive part of the set-up along with Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, Phil Salt, Harry Brook, and others.

For India, the case has been a bit challenging. In batting-friendly conditions, their batters are expected to do well with the bat, while the fast bowlers are always expected to get swing and seam movement with the new ball in English conditions, at least inside the powerplay.

There are a few specific venues where the spinners also come into play, including the recent opening T20I of the 2026 series at Chester-Le-Street in Durham, where the Shreyas Iyer-led side went with three spinners, including Varun Chakaravarthy, Axar Patel, and Ravi Bishnoi.

India's T20I results in England — A breakdown of wins and losses

The very first T20I game for India in England came at Trent Bridge when they blew away Bangladesh with a 25-run win, thanks to Pragyan Ojha’s fine bowling of 4/21 in four overs. After another win over Ireland, they lost against West Indies when DJ Bravo played an attacking knock of 66* off 36 balls in the seven-wicket chase.

The very first game against England in the latter’s home conditions came in 2009 at Lord’s during the T20 World Cup when the hosts batted first to post 153 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Kevin Pietersen played a sensational knock of 46 runs off 27 balls with the help of five boundaries and one six.

Meanwhile, India fell short of the target and lost the contest by three runs. Yusuf Pathan tried hard for his 33 runs off 17 balls at a strike rate of 194.12, but that went in vain. They also lost against South Africa in the 131-run chase at Trent Bridge to end the campaign.

The very first bilateral T20I against England in English conditions for India came in 2011. At Old Trafford in Manchester, the hosts completed the 166-run chase thanks to Morgan’s 49 runs off 27 balls. In 2014, they played another one-off T20I game at Edgbaston and held their nerve for the three-run victory.

These two defeats were followed by the three-match series in 2018, where the tourists came out on the right side of the result under Virat Kohli. They started the series with a win in Manchester before England made a strong comeback in Cardiff. But Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten 100 in Bristol earned them the series victory.

Four years later, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side won the first two games of the three-match series in Southampton and Birmingham. In the third game, the home side got the consolation victory by 17 runs despite SKY’s thumping knock of 117 in 55 balls. The most recent game in 2026 in Durham ended in an abandoned clash due to rain.

Rohit Sharma is the leading run-getter of the Indian side in the shortest format on English soil. He has smashed 335 runs in 12 innings at an average of 33.50 and a strike rate of 133.46, thanks to one fifty and one century at the best score of 100* in Bristol. Virat Kohli sits in second place in the table with 192 runs at an average of 32 in this qualification at a strike rate of 133.33 with one fifty. That came towards the end of his horrible trip to the United Kingdom in 2014 at Edgbaston.

Suryakumar Yadav played just one series in England and has smashed 171 runs in three innings, including the 117-run knock at Trent Bridge with scores of 39 and 15. Another former captain and wicket-keeper batter, MS Dhoni, who is the fourth leading run-getter with 153 runs in eight innings, had a poor strike rate of 110.07

Can India turn around their T20I fortunes in England?

Undoubtedly, India haven’t done well in the shortest format on English soil. They have struggled in both the batting and bowling departments of the game. But in 2026, they have gone with three spinners in the playing XI along with the spin all-rounder, Washington Sundar, in the squad.

The blue brigade, meanwhile, have earned 18 victories out of the 31 clashes in the shortest format of the game at a win-loss ratio of 1.5. This includes the two successive victories in the T20 World Cup during the 2024 and 2026 editions in Mumbai and Guyana, respectively.

This came after their eye-watering 10-wicket defeat in the T20 WC 2022 semifinal at the Adelaide Oval. The Shreyas Iyer-led side hopes to improve their overall T20I performance on England soil with some fiery batting and economical bowling, with some control by both the pace and spin departments of the game.

India have got the better of the England side in the ICC events in the recent past. And if they continue the same aggressive approach and control over the opponents in all the departments of the game in the bilateral series, the result won’t be any different.
