Hasan Mahmud and Bangladesh players react as a third umpire review overturns a hat-trick appeal during the 2nd Test against West Indies

On the second day of the second Test series between Bangladesh and West Indies at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Hasan Mahmud found himself short by inches from taking his second hat-trick as the third umpire had to overturn the decision after the West Indies batter went for a review.

The opening day of the game ended in the favour of the visiting side, thanks to the superb unbeaten century from Amir Jangoo along with the fine half-century from Kevin Wickham. The former’s century-run partnership with Justin Greaves kept them in the driver’s seat for a long time.

It was the fourth delivery of the 82nd over of the innings when Hasan Mahmud sent back Jangoo for 132 runs off 212 balls. It was an error in judgement from the well-set batter, who didn’t expect the ball to come back as he lifted his bat skywards and watched the ball nipping back and breaking the stumps.

On the very next delivery, Roston Chase, the West Indies captain, was dismissed for a golden duck. It was a length delivery outside the off stump, which pitched and seamed beautifully with extra bounce to get the thick outside edge of the right-handed batter into the hands of the wicket-keeper.

Hasan had nearly celebrated his second hat-trick with the wicket of Joshua Bishop. The umpire had raised his finger, but the successful review from the visitors saw the decision being overturned. Despite that, it was a superb over from the right-arm pacer, who later went on to celebrate his five-wicket haul.

How West Indies batted in the first innings of the 2nd Test against Bangladesh: Key moments

Bangladesh made a superb start on the first day of the game as the tourists were reduced to 27/3 in 8.4 overs before the 131-run fourth-wicket stand between centurion Jangoo and half-centurion Wickham shouldered them to a strong position in the game. Later, Greaves also got a fifty.

However, the Caribbean side struggled in their lower order’s batting and lost their five wickets just 59 runs in the middle. Hasan registered another five-wicket haul and figures of 6/90 in 24 overs with a maiden.
