India Women's T20 World Cup 2026 preview: Strengths, weaknesses & predicted finish — Full analysis
Here is the SWOT analysis of the Indian Women's cricket team heading into the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 where they begin their campaign on June 14 against Pakistan at Edgbaston

In the history of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cups, India’s best overall performance came in 2020, when they finished as runners-up, losing the final to Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). They also fell short by a small margin from reaching the finals of the 2023 season when they lost the knockout clash against the same opposition at Newlands.
Under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, India have geared up with a lot of expectation for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England after their ODI World Cup triumph last year at home. Fans are hoping that the blue brigade will script another memorable campaign to lift their maiden T20 World Cup as well.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), amidst all the injury setbacks, announced their best possible 15-member squad as they are placed in Group 1 along with Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands. That means reaching the semifinals will be a massive challenge from the ‘group of death.’
They failed to qualify for the semifinals in the last edition of the tournament, and that’s where the pressure is more on them to do well in the shortest format, especially with the growth of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
The games won’t be easy, with Australia always showing their all-round capabilities. The South Africa side will be eager to do well after finishing as the runners-up of the previous edition, losing to New Zealand. And it’s always hard to predict Pakistan’s performance in the competition along with Bangladesh and the Dutch side.
India’s squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026-
Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Bharti Fulmali, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh, Shree Charani, Yastika Bhatia, Nandani Sharma, Arundhati Reddy, Renuka Singh, Kranti Gaud, Shreyanka Patil, Radha Yadav.
India Women's biggest strengths heading into T20 World Cup 2026 — What can power them to the title?

India will begin their campaign against the arch-rivals Pakistan on June 14. The mouth-watering clash will take place at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
Strength: India’s clinical batting unit keeps their hopes alive
As it always has been the case heading into any tournament, India always get a strong batting unit. At least the top five look fixed. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma to open, followed by Jemimah Rodrigues at number three. Their captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, will be at four, with the wicket-keeper batter, Richa Ghosh, getting the spot of number five.
Since the end of the previous T20 World Cup in 2024, Mandhana has been India’s leading run-getter. The southpaw has cracked 765 runs in 21 innings at an average of 38.25 and a strike rate of 139.4, thanks to her six half-centuries and one century.
Meanwhile, Shafali Verma has offered her the best contribution from the other end. The right-handed opener has clubbed 677 runs in 21 innings at an average of 35.63 and a blistering strike rate of nearly 160, with the help of six fifties at the best score of unbeaten 79 runs.

Harmanpreet, in the same period, has collected 499 runs with three fifties, while Rodrigues has thumped 590 runs at a strike rate of more than 140.

Richa’s power and smartness have been two of the biggest benefits for the national side in the last few years. The Bengal-born has drilled 374 runs at a strike rate of 163.31 for the Indian side. She will be needed to show the same aggressive approach with the bat in the middle order of the batting department.
Both the Indian openers have found success in England in the shortest format of the game. Mandhana has clubbed 650 runs in 19 innings, while Shafali has 431 runs at a strike rate of nearly 140 in the qualification.
Weaknesses & threat zones: Where can India Women slip up in T20 World Cup 2026?

However, India have a few weaknesses and threat zones to work upon before the start of the T20 World Cup 2026 campaign-
Weakness- India’s inexperienced pace attack due to injury setbacks
In England’s seaming-friendly conditions, the pacers are always expected to play a major role with the ball to get the swing and early movement inside the powerplay. However, India will miss their experienced pacers like Amanjot Kaur and Kashvee Gautam/
Renuka Singh Thakur will, of course, lead their bowling attack with the experience. However, her fitness and workload management will be under everyone’s attention. Arundhati Reddy, Nandni Sharma, and Kranti Gaud will also have a major role to play under pressure.

Arundhati is their third leading wicket-taker since the end of the last T20 World Cup in 2024, with 20 scalps in 19 innings at an economy rate of nearly eight. The chart is led by Shree Charani’s 28 wickets in 20 innings at an average of 20.17.
Deepti Sharma comes in second position in the table, having picked up 26 wickets in 23 innings at an economy rate of 7.92. Renuka has bowled 42 overs in the shortest format in the last 20 months. So, her fitness will always come into the equation for the blue brigade if they qualify for the semifinals.
Threats: India’s inconsistency has been their constant issue in WT20Is

Since the end of the last T20 World Cup in 2024, India have earned 14 victories in 24 clashes at a win-loss ratio of 1.4. This is not a great number for any top-class side. Breaking these games will give a clearer picture.
After the T20 World Cup 2024, India have played six series of the shortest format, winning four successive ones against Sri Lanka, England, West Indies, and Australia. They blew away the Chamari Athapaththu-led side for a 5-0 margin before winning the away T20I series by a 2-1 margin.

But they couldn’t continue the same success and were handed a 4-1 series defeat against the Proteas in South Africa. Just before the start of the World Cup, they faced England in a three-match T20I series in the UK and ended up losing the series by a 2-1 margin, despite beginning with a massive victory in Chelmsford.
Another real threat for the Indian side is their bowling unit’s variety. They don’t have a leg spinner, who always plays a huge role in any format of the game. The four spinners are divided into two off-spinners and two left-arm orthodox. A leg spinner could have opened a new gate for Harmanpreet to provide them with more flexibility and bowling options against different oppositions.
India Women T20 World Cup 2026 predicted finish — Dark horses or genuine contenders?
Overall, they have a decent squad with a few young players who can show their ability in various departments of the game-
Opportunity: India’s youngsters need to take responsibility

Yastika Bhatia will hope to use her opportunity for the Indian side in the top order if she gets the chance to be in the eleven. The left-handed batter bashed 54 runs off 40 balls during the first of the three-match T20I series against England at a strike rate of 135, thanks to nine boundaries and one six.
Radha Yadav and Bharti Fulmali are also part of the list of players who could use their opportunity. Radha has made a comeback after a long gap, playing her last game for the Indian side during the ODI World Cup 2025. She was part of the India-A side where he picked up four wickets against Sri Lanka and collected two wickets in each of the clashes against Nepal and Pakistan.
The same goes with Bharti, although looking at the possible combinations, it might be hard for her to break into the side regularly. For Nandni as well, the event could prove to be a huge platform to display their talent at the biggest stage.
India’s predicted finish in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026
If India play to their potential, they have the chance to qualify for the semifinal of the tournament. After not qualifying for the last semi-stage in 2024, the pressure will be there, which should now be quite regular for the players at the international stage in any competition.
